Lake of Ill Omen

The Lake of Ill Omen (aka "LOIO") is immense, dwarfing even the next largest lake on Kunark. It gets its name from tales arising from the Iksar tribal era. Many Iksar, after bathing in the lake, suffered untimely and horrid deaths in the days that followed. Upon touching the waters, the victims were said to experience vivid dreams of their fate soon to come. After their deaths, the cursed Iksar arose as mindless zombies. Of course, this is all the stuff of legend - now, many swim the waters of this saltwater lake, ostensibly without suffering such a dire fate.

The old port city of Veksar once lay upon the shoreline. At one point, giant earthquakes caused an enormous chunk of land, Veksar included, to slide into the depths of the lake. Just beyond the shoreline, one can see the peaks of Veksar structures that pierce the water's surface. Many ruins of Veksar stand almost as they once did, others lie toppled on the basin floor.

The basin was once a very active thermal vent region, as the former residents of Veksar can attest. Fissures, too narrow to enter, spout bubbles and hint of a subterranean cavity existing underneath the sedimentary layer of rock.

In truth, a large portion of the old city of Veksar now lies in an immense cavern in the underworld of the Underfoot, where it has been swallowed up and then given new life as the sliding land behind the city formed a roof to hold back the water once again. A fissure still has multiple whirpools sucking down water slowly and forming waterfalls of immense height in the Underfoot. The salty seawater is fed into the lake via a channel connecting the lake to the ocean.[1]

Dangers

The Sarnak have made camp in this region. They are extremely hostile and territorial, attacking any adventurer who crosses their path. The Sarnak usually travel in groups, but when one is caught alone, he will often cry for aid from his nearby companions who will quickly join the fight.

A great monster of ancient origin is said to dwell within the Lake of Ill Omen's depths, swimming through the calm, warm waters in search of prey. It is rumored that many an adventurer has dove into the waters only to never be heard from again.[1]

The only true danger in this area is all of the wandering monsters that roam around the area. The worst of these are the goblins which are hard to see at night in the grassy areas, and many powerful goblins can be found wandering through areas inhabited by much less powerful creatures. Also, the sarnak are hard to see, but they are much less frequently found wandering around. The bloodgill goblins in the water are also highly aggressive if you like to swim, and occasionally are seen walking the shores, although they are likely trained there. There are several areas with high concentrations of creatures that warrant mention. The more frequent are the ruins throughout the area, which are typically turned into outposts for either the outcast Iksar or the goblins. Since they are often inside the buildings, care needs to be taken when moving around these areas.

The area that is most dangerous, however, is the area to the southwest, where the sarnak have recaptured an ancient Iksar fortress and turned it into their stronghold in the area. Traveling anywhere near the area means that you will encounter many wandering sarnak, all of which are highly aggressive and strong. There is an area of less danger, and that is the goblin mines to the northwest of the lake. The small entrance belies the vast network of catacombs that exist beneath the mountains, and the goblins numbers are far more than they would seem based on their surface patrols.

There is also sometimes a high level mob named Deep on the south side of the lake which may be unexpected and hostile for some characters. And of course, the guards at the entrance to Cabilis are usually deadly for any non-iksar.

Benefits

Many people enjoy the lake both for the peace and serenity of the landscape and for its excellent hunting opportunities. Due to its proximity to Firiona Vie, the Lake of Ill Omen is a desirable destination for those who enjoy good relations with the elven outpost.[1]

This area has a good mix of creatures, and they are typically found in small clusters that you can easily hunt with a small group. That allows for some good areas to hunt if you fit the appropriate level range for the monsters in that area.

This area is also an excellent area for both necromancers and shadow knights to hunt, as there are hordes of skeletons of various types that provide bone chips for them. It is also the area where the beginning quests for both necromancers and shadow knights are primarily based, so they can be found hunting in this area a great deal.

Traveling To and From

The Iksar city of Cabilis lies to the northeast through a long, narrow valley. Just south of the valley entrance lies a small gorge with a stream that feeds the lake. This gorge leads to a small spring that also feeds down to the old elven beachhead of Firiona Vie.

Far to the west, just north of the sarnak fortress lies the narrow pass to the Frontier Mountains.

Lore

In ages past, the Kylong tribe was known to take up residence in the small trade village of Veksar. Veksar was located over a magical spring of healing waters situated in a valley where the Lake of Ill Omen now sits. Legend has it that Veksar sank, and are now jealously guarded by goblins at the bottom of the lake.
